The Windsor Hotel in Hermanus

The Windsor Hotel

This weekend us three went away for our first getaway as a family since our little boy was born. It was a special weekend full of many firsts such as MJ’s first encounter with a dassie, horse and chicken.

I won this hotel voucher a while back and in true Stevens style redeemed the voucher on the last weekend before it expired.

We stayed at the Windsor Hotel and were super excited to learn that it is the oldest hotel in Hermanus. We had quite a bit of fun reading up on the history of the hotel while staying there and checking out all of the historical photographs. Big ups to the kid whose school project about the hotel is on display in the lobby, it was fun to read.

I loved the mix of monochromatic finishings with warm homey antiques in the lobby and lounge areas.

Although this is not a five star luxury resort, we felt it got all the basics right that are needed for a comfortable stay.

  • The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our entire stay. They stored hubby’s mountain bike for us which definitely won them bonus points in his books.
  • The rooms, although quite basic, were neat and clean. I was very pleased to see that they had white linen. I firmly believe all hotel linen should be white.
  • The mattress was nice and comfy.
  • A major bonus is that we could do whale watching from our room or our personal patio… not that we saw any whales.
  • Affordability.

The hotel is situated on the cliffs overlooking the moody Hermanus ocean. We loved that you could step out of the hotel and onto rolling lawns, plonk yourself on a seaside bench or stroll along the really awesome seaside path. This path is really well maintained and has informative signs that make the walk all the more interesting. We also quite enjoyed the artwork that lined this path.

We took a sunset stroll along the path and looked for a restaurant to eat dinner after which MJ conveniently fell asleep in his pram on the walk home.

Thanks to the Windsor Hotel for a great weekend away. I daresay that we will be back one day with more family members and mountain bikes in tow.
